Comments by Nitin Sahasrabudhe

Wow!!! This group has finally woken up. Zopalele sagale khadabadun jaage zaale.

Let's not continue with nicknames. Some of these are not very flattering and after so many years I am sure a bit embarrassing to those individuals.

On old PTV memories, some of the things I remember:

- 10/9 boys team won the volleyball championship for that year. We had a big celebration after this win
- Kabaddi gheltana nehami honara konacha tari 'ganapati bappa'
- Me being the wicket keeper when playing cricket after school hours
- When playing 'sakhali', when two Kulkarni's paired up and formed a sakhali chasing others, Mahesh Apte referring to them as "Two Kulle's" chasing others (ha ha)
- Playing with ball bearing on the desk, and then stopping at the cycle shop on the way back to home from PTV, searching for used ball bearings
- We used to have annual 'sahal' every year, but one year the ST bus we were traveling in had some mechanical problem and went into a ditch by the side of the road. Ever since our annual 'sahal' was cancelled and we used to have 'Jambori Night' instead.
(You can tell I was more interested in sports in PTV than studies)

And the most bizarre of all, the rivalry between girls and boys in class and the two groups not communicating with each other. How strange?

Since we are recalling old PTV memories, I have attached a Marathi Kavita (which I have sent before) to this email with title 'Malaa Punha ekada tari Shaalet Jayachay'. Hope this will help recall more of the PTV stories.

More momories

Those nicknames! reading them after so many years still bring some visuals!

Great comments by the way!

I have one more story to add -
I think this must be 5th standard when we were learning to construct a sentence in English. Forget who was the teacher. Everybody class came up with some simple sentences. (Nirupdravi)
Gadre was not ready to say his sentence but finally the teacher made him say it.

He said "You are a fool"

I think the teacher never asked him a question ever again!

I also can't forget Chindhya's fight with the girls over stolen Ball bearing.

Remember we used to argue over the airline by watching the tail of the plane. All this while in the middle of the class (when planes were taking off from emerency runway and go directly over our school)
Apte bai complained to my Mom about that. But you got to make the best of the situation. What else can we do in that deafening sound!
Anybody have the old postcards we used to request to the airline companies?

As I recall, we had a Marathi "dhada" which was part of Vee. Vaa.
Shirwadkar's NataSamraat.
For some personal reasons, our Marathi teacher changed right in
the middle of the semester
and the temporary replacement was one hell of a sample. ( I don't
recall either of their names
but the replacement was not worth remembering. )

She started off one class by announcing that she did not really
need the job and her husband was
a big shot in government job. In one of the subsequent lectures,
she read this chapter - really classic
tragic part of the play, large part soliloquy by the protagonist -
with as much verve as railway announcements
( Yeh gaadi Andherisey Bandra, Bandrasey Dadar, Dadarsey Bombay
Central tak tej jayegi )
and less voice mudulation still. At the end with a very blank
expression on her face she asked the
whole class, What's there to not understand in this? ( Yachyaat na
samajnysarkha kaay aahey? ) .
I could feel the whole class's disappointment that day.

Within a few days from there KunteBai was assigned to 10/9 for an
"off" period and I remember
Mahesh Apte was instrumental in convincing her to explain/re-read
this chapter. Somehow we "knew"
she was the right one.

She just rose to the occasion and without any preparation
explained the entire Natasamraat story
almost frame by frame. Her explanation that day really put into
context hero's tragedy and held
the entire class spellbound.

25 years later, I amazed at her ability to understand children's
predicament within seconds
and instantly launch the efforts to salvage the situation. The
stark difference in two teachers'
ways stands out even today.

The usual, cowardly disclaimer about my memory applies here as well.

People on copy are my sisters, Medha ( 10/8 1978 batch ) , Mita
(10/4 1980 batch) and cousin Sarita Bhatt ( 10/9 1981 batch).
And please don't anyone say "Aiyyaa / Ailaa tu
Medhacha/Mitacha/Saritacha Bhaoo". I have suffered that comment
for too many years.
