As I recall, we had a Marathi "dhada" which was part of Vee. Vaa.
Shirwadkar's NataSamraat.
For some personal reasons, our Marathi teacher changed right in
the middle of the semester
and the temporary replacement was one hell of a sample. ( I don't
recall either of their names
but the replacement was not worth remembering. )
She started off one class by announcing that she did not really
need the job and her husband was
a big shot in government job. In one of the subsequent lectures,
she read this chapter - really classic
tragic part of the play, large part soliloquy by the protagonist -
with as much verve as railway announcements
( Yeh gaadi Andherisey Bandra, Bandrasey Dadar, Dadarsey Bombay
Central tak tej jayegi )
and less voice mudulation still. At the end with a very blank
expression on her face she asked the
whole class, What's there to not understand in this? ( Yachyaat na
samajnysarkha kaay aahey? ) .
I could feel the whole class's disappointment that day.
Within a few days from there KunteBai was assigned to 10/9 for an
"off" period and I remember
Mahesh Apte was instrumental in convincing her to explain/re-read
this chapter. Somehow we "knew"
she was the right one.
She just rose to the occasion and without any preparation
explained the entire Natasamraat story
almost frame by frame. Her explanation that day really put into
context hero's tragedy and held
the entire class spellbound.
25 years later, I amazed at her ability to understand children's
predicament within seconds
and instantly launch the efforts to salvage the situation. The
stark difference in two teachers'
ways stands out even today.
The usual, cowardly disclaimer about my memory applies here as well.
People on copy are my sisters, Medha ( 10/8 1978 batch ) , Mita
(10/4 1980 batch) and cousin Sarita Bhatt ( 10/9 1981 batch).
And please don't anyone say "Aiyyaa / Ailaa tu
Medhacha/Mitacha/Saritacha Bhaoo". I have suffered that comment
for too many years.
